Two-Year Window Policy

The two-year window policy in rugby union limits the age gap between players and the age grade they compete in. The policy applies to junior and school age grade competitions up to and including U19.

How does the policy work?

  • Players can’t participate in an age grade competition more than two years above their age on January 1st of the year the competition is played.

Example: A player participating in an Under 16 competition must be turning 15 or 16 years of age during the year in which the competition is run.

Why does the policy exist?

The policy aims to keep players safe and ensure they play with others who have similar physical development and skill levels.

When can players request dispensation?

Players may be able to request dispensation to play in an age grade that’s one year above or below their eligible age grade. This may be possible if their physical development, ability, or experience is suitable.

What are the steps for requesting dispensation?

Players can request dispensation by completing a Schedule B Assessment Form.
